SEND and Inclusion
SEND and Inclusion at Weston Village Primary School
At Weston Village Primary School, we are proud to be an inclusive school where every child is valued, supported and encouraged to achieve their very best. We believe that all children belong in the heart of our school community and that every child deserves to feel safe, confident and successful.
Inclusion at Weston is rooted in our Secrets of Success. We want every child to try new things, work hard, concentrate, push themselves, imagine, improve, understand others and never give up. We celebrate difference and work hard to remove barriers so that all children can learn, play and thrive alongside their peers.
What do we mean by SEND?
SEND stands for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. A child may be identified as having SEND if they have a learning difficulty or disability that means they need additional support in order to make progress. This may include needs linked to:
Communication and interaction
Cognition and learning
Social, emotional and mental health
Sensory and/or physical needs
Some children may have a disability under the Equality Act 2010 and may or may not also have SEND. Where a disability impacts learning and requires additional support, we ensure the right provision is put in place.
Our Approach: Early Support and High Expectations
We aim to identify children’s needs as early as possible so that support can begin quickly. We use teacher assessments, observations, progress data, parent feedback and, where appropriate, advice from external professionals to build a clear picture of each child.
Our first step is always high-quality classroom teaching, with adaptations and inclusive strategies to ensure children can access learning successfully.
The Graduated Approach: Assess, Plan, Do, Review
At Weston, we follow the graduated approach recommended in the SEND Code of Practice. This means support is carefully planned and reviewed through a cycle of:
Assess – Plan – Do – Review
This ensures that strategies and interventions are matched to a child’s needs and that progress is monitored regularly.
Children may receive support at different levels depending on their needs, including:
Universal provision (inclusive classroom practice for all)
Monitoring / First Concerns (short-term targeted support)
SEN Support (formal support plan and SEND register)
Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) (for significant long-term needs)
Working Together with Families
We know that children do best when school and home work closely together. We are committed to strong relationships with parents and carers, and we involve families at every stage of SEND support.
Parents of children with SEND are invited to meet with staff three times a year to review progress, celebrate strengths and agree next steps. We also listen carefully to children’s views and ensure they are part of decisions about their learning.
Our SEND Team
Our SEND provision is led by our SENCo: Mrs Emma Loveland.
All teachers at Weston are teachers of children with SEND, and class teachers remain responsible for ensuring that every child in their class makes progress. Our SENCo works alongside staff to provide guidance, training and support, and to coordinate additional provision when needed.
A named governor supports SEND across the school: Dr Rebecca Clifford-Ball.
Our Commitment
At Weston Village Primary School, we measure success not only by progress and attainment, but also by whether children feel confident, independent and that they truly belong.
We are committed to creating a school where every child is supported, respected and able to flourish.
