Parent's Guide to Spelling Shed

At Weston Village Primary School, we are committed to helping children become confident and accurate spellers. To support this journey, we use Spelling Shed, a highly engaging and interactive online platform that complements our teaching and allows pupils to practise their spelling skills in a fun and effective way.

What Is Spelling Shed?

Spelling Shed is a web-based programme designed to make learning spellings exciting and accessible. It provides tailored spelling lists, interactive games, and challenges that reinforce spelling patterns, high-frequency words, and statutory words from the National Curriculum.

The platform is suitable for all year groups and helps children develop their spelling accuracy while boosting their confidence. It also encourages independent practice, making it an invaluable tool for home and school use.

How Spelling Shed Works at Our School

  • Weekly Spelling Lists: Teachers set weekly spelling lists on Spelling Shed, linked to the curriculum and tailored to each year group’s learning objectives.

  • In-Class Activities: Pupils practise spellings through engaging activities during lessons, including dictation, games, and discussions about spelling patterns and rules.

  • Home Practice: Spelling Shed is used at home to consolidate learning. Pupils can log in to complete their assigned spelling lists and play games that adapt to their progress.

  • Regular Assessment: Teachers monitor children’s progress on the platform, using insights to identify strengths and areas for improvement.

Benefits of Spelling Shed

  • Engaging and Fun: The game-like design motivates children to practise their spellings regularly.

  • Personalised Learning: Spelling Shed adjusts to each pupil’s ability, ensuring the level of challenge is appropriate.

  • Parental Involvement: Parents can easily engage with their child’s learning and track their progress.

  • Accessible Anywhere: Spelling Shed can be accessed on a computer, tablet, or smartphone, making it easy to use at home or on the go.

Tips for Supporting Your Child at Home

  • Make Practice Routine: Set aside a regular time for Spelling Shed practice, even just 10–15 minutes a day.

  • Get Involved: Play games together and encourage your child to explain the spelling rules they’ve learnt.

  • Praise Progress: Celebrate your child’s efforts and achievements to build their confidence.

  • Link to Real Life: Point out spelling patterns or tricky words in books or when writing together.
