Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Our Vision

At Weston Village Primary School, we believe that a child’s early experiences lay the foundations for their future learning and well-being. Our EYFS provision offers a safe, stimulating, and nurturing environment where children can thrive, explore, and develop a lifelong love of learning.

We aim to create confident, independent learners who are curious about the world around them. Through a play-based and child-centred approach, our EYFS curriculum encourages children to become resilient, reflective, and ready for the next stage of their education.

Our EYFS children are supported to Be the Best They Can Be, in line with our Secrets of Success ethos. They leave the Early Years as happy, enthusiastic learners who are well-prepared for Key Stage 1 and beyond.

Intent

Our EYFS curriculum is carefully designed to provide a broad and balanced foundation for all areas of learning and development, ensuring every child makes excellent progress from their starting points. Our aim is to nurture confident, capable learners through:

  • A strong focus on communication, language, and vocabulary development.

  • High-quality, engaging provision that promotes independence and curiosity.

  • Carefully sequenced learning across all seven areas of the EYFS framework.

  • A commitment to inclusive practice so that every child, including those with SEND or EAL, is supported to flourish.

  • Strong partnerships with parents and carers to enhance learning at home and school.

Implementation

Our curriculum is driven by children’s interests, as well as carefully planned themes and topics that develop knowledge and skills across the EYFS areas of learning. Our daily practice combines adult-led teaching, child-initiated play, and targeted intervention to support every child.

Areas of Learning:

  • Communication and Language: Developing speaking, listening, and understanding skills through rich conversations, storytelling, and questioning.

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development: Building confidence, resilience, and positive relationships, alongside understanding feelings and behaviour.

  • Physical Development: Enhancing fine and gross motor skills through play, physical education, and outdoor learning.

  • Literacy: Developing a love of reading and writing through our phonics programme (Read Write Inc.), shared reading, and purposeful writing opportunities.

  • Mathematics: Building early number sense, pattern, and spatial awareness using Ten Town and a mastery approach.

  • Understanding the World: Exploring the local community and wider world through hands-on experiences and celebrations of diversity.

  • Expressive Arts and Design: Encouraging creativity through music, role play, art, and model-making.

Our learning environment includes two engaging classrooms and an outdoor area, both of which support active, exploratory learning.

Our Curriculum in Action

Our EYFS Curriculum Map is structured across the academic year, with exciting themes such as:

  • Autumn: Traditional Tales, Dinosaurs

  • Spring: Space, Superheroes, People Who Help Us

  • Summer: The Great Outdoors, Under the Sea, Pirates

Each theme is enriched with visits, visitors, celebrations, and hands-on learning experiences. Children participate in festivals such as Diwali, Chinese New Year, and Harvest, developing their understanding of the wider world.

We use high-quality texts and songs to support communication and literacy, and our systematic synthetic phonics programme ensures strong foundations in early reading and writing.

In maths, children develop fluency with numbers to 10 and 20, learning to subitise, count confidently, and explore patterns through practical activities.

Enrichment and Wider Opportunities

Learning in EYFS goes beyond the classroom. We offer:

  • Regular outdoor learning and Forest School sessions.

  • Visits to places like the library, post office, and local farms.

  • Whole-school celebrations including World Book Day, Healthy Eating Week, and Random Acts of Kindness Day.

  • Collaborative projects with Key Stage 1 to ease transition.

We encourage parental engagement through stay-and-play sessions, parent workshops, and shared events.

Impact

We carefully monitor the progress of every child through formative observations and assessments. This ensures that all children are well-supported to achieve the Early Learning Goals across all areas of learning.

Our children leave EYFS as:

  • Happy, confident, and independent learners.

  • Enthusiastic communicators with a love of stories, songs, and books.

  • Mathematically confident, with a deep understanding of numbers and patterns.

  • Curious about the world around them, respecting diversity and valuing friendships.

Inclusion

Every child is unique. At Weston, we offer personalised support for pupils with SEND or EAL, ensuring that all children can access our curriculum and achieve their potential. We provide additional interventions, visual supports, and adapted learning where needed.
