Our OPAL Play Approach

Our OPAL Play Approach

At our school, play is a vital part of children’s learning, wellbeing and development. We follow the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) approach, which supports children to enjoy rich, active, creative and inclusive play every day.

OPAL recognises that play helps children:

  • Build confidence and independence

  • Develop social skills and positive relationships

  • Take appropriate risks and learn how to manage them safely

  • Be creative, curious and resilient

  • Feel happy, healthy and valued

Our playtimes are an essential part of the school day and are planned and protected to ensure all children can play freely, safely and happily.

Our OPAL Play Charter

The OPAL Play Children’s Charter reflects our shared expectations and is developed with children at the heart of it. It helps everyone understand how we play well together.

These rules help create a positive, fair and enjoyable play environment for everyone.

How Our Play Policy Supports the Charter

Our OPAL Play Policy ensures that children can explore, take risks and challenge themselves within clear and consistent boundaries.

Safety and Risk

  • We balance the benefits of risk with sensible safety measures

  • Children are encouraged to assess risks themselves with adult support

  • Staff carry out regular checks of the play environment and equipment

Inclusion and Respect

  • All children have the right to play, regardless of ability, background or interests

  • Staff support children to resolve disagreements positively

Bullying and exclusion are not tolerated

Responsibility and Independence

  • Children are trusted to use equipment responsibly

  • Everyone helps to tidy and care for the play space

  • Children are encouraged to problem-solve and make choices

The Role of Adults

Adults play an important role in OPAL playtimes by:

  • Observing rather than directing play

  • Supporting children to manage risks safely

  • Encouraging cooperation and inclusive behaviour

  • Reinforcing the Play Charter and school values

This approach helps children develop independence while knowing adults are there to support them.

Working Together

By following the OPAL approach and Play Charter, we create a play environment where children feel:

  • Safe

  • Trusted

  • Respected

  • Free to explore and learn

We value the support of families in reinforcing these messages and celebrating the importance of play.
