Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE), Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Citizenship

Our Vision

At Weston Village Primary School, PSHE, RSE and Citizenship underpin our whole-school ethos of Be the Best You Can Be. Our curriculum equips children with the knowledge, understanding, and skills to manage their lives now and in the future. It promotes physical and mental health, emotional well-being, and the development of strong, respectful relationships. Through a rich, inclusive programme of learning, we empower pupils to become responsible citizens, equipped to make informed decisions and contribute positively to society.

PSHE, RSE and Citizenship are embedded not only in our curriculum but also in our wider school culture. From our Secrets of Success values to our pupil leadership roles, we create a nurturing environment where every child feels valued, safe, and supported.

Intent

Our PSHE, RSE and Citizenship curriculum ensures all pupils develop the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives. It supports their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, preparing them to play an active role as citizens in modern Britain.

Our aims are to:

  • Promote health and well-being, supporting physical and mental health.

  • Foster positive, respectful and healthy relationships, both in person and online.

  • Develop knowledge of rights, responsibilities, and British Values, enabling pupils to make informed decisions and participate actively in their communities.

  • Prepare children for life’s challenges, including changes during puberty and beyond.

  • Equip pupils with the financial awareness and economic understanding to thrive in the wider world.

  • Encourage participation in democracy and active citizenship through school life.

Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) is delivered as part of PSHE. We ensure that this learning is age-appropriate, inclusive, and sensitive to the needs of all pupils, providing them with accurate knowledge and the confidence to make safe, healthy choices.

Inclusion is at the heart of our approach. We ensure every child, regardless of need or background, has full access to an enriching and supportive PSHE, RSE and Citizenship curriculum.

Implementation

Our PSHE, RSE and Citizenship curriculum is delivered through weekly lessons and integrated learning opportunities across the wider curriculum and school life. It follows a spiral approach, ensuring learning is revisited and developed as children progress from EYFS to Year 6.

We follow a structured scheme of work under three core themes:

  • Health and Well-being

  • Relationships (RSE)

  • Living in the Wider World (Citizenship)

Curriculum delivery includes:

  • Discreet, planned weekly lessons linked to key concepts and the statutory guidance for RSE and Citizenship.

  • Cross-curricular links, including PE, Science, Computing, and RE, to reinforce key messages.

  • Whole-school assemblies addressing themes such as respect, equality, democracy, and safeguarding.

  • Responsive teaching to address emerging issues and pupil needs.

Pupils learn through discussion, debate, role play and group activities that develop empathy, reflection, and emotional intelligence. Our RSE curriculum is taught in an inclusive, safe and supportive environment, guided by our Relationships and Sex Education Policy.

Our Curriculum in Action

EYFS (Sparrows): Children explore relationships, emotions, and health through stories, play, and circle time. They develop understanding of their community, rules, and routines.
Key Stage 1: Pupils learn about friendship, family, healthy lifestyles, and safety. They explore the concept of rights and responsibilities within the school and the wider world.
Lower Key Stage 2: Pupils deepen their understanding of emotions, respect, and diversity. They explore democracy through School Council elections and develop economic understanding through enterprise initiatives.
Upper Key Stage 2: Pupils explore complex issues including prejudice, discrimination, peer influence and digital citizenship. RSE covers puberty, reproduction, and relationships, ensuring pupils are well-prepared for secondary school and beyond.

Enrichment and Wider Opportunities

PSHE, RSE and Citizenship are central to school life at Weston:

  • Our School Ambassadors give pupils a voice in shaping school life and promote democratic participation.

  • Safeguarding and Anti-Bullying Ambassadors champion pupil well-being and positive relationships.

  • The Weston Mile and Secrets of Success promote physical and mental well-being.

  • Themed weeks focus on areas such as mental health, anti-bullying, online safety, and diversity.

  • Visitors, including healthcare professionals and the emergency services, support learning in health, safety, and citizenship.

  • Community involvement through charity fundraising, food bank collections, and volunteering builds responsible citizenship.

Impact

We measure the impact of our PSHE, RSE and Citizenship curriculum by:

  • Pupil voice surveys to gauge confidence, understanding, and enjoyment.

  • Lesson observations and learning walks to ensure consistent, high-quality teaching.

  • Monitoring of class work, journals and displays to showcase learning.

  • Assessment against clear objectives, supported by pupil reflection and teacher judgment.

  • Evaluation of whole-school initiatives, including ambassador programmes and the School Council.

Our children leave Weston Village Primary School with the confidence, knowledge and skills to succeed as responsible, respectful, and active members of society.

Inclusion

PSHE, RSE and Citizenship are for all. We differentiate resources, provide additional support, and ensure that learning is accessible and meaningful to every child, including those with SEND. Our inclusive curriculum celebrates diversity and fosters a culture of respect and understanding.
