Governor Role FAQs

What does a school governor do?

School governors work as a team to oversee the strategic leadership of Weston Village Primary School. Governors are responsible for:

  • Setting the school’s vision, ethos, and strategic direction

  • Supporting and challenging the headteacher and leadership team

  • Monitoring the school’s educational performance and pupil outcomes

  • Overseeing the school’s finances to ensure money is well spent

It’s a voluntary role, but one that makes a huge impact on the school and community.

Do I need experience in education to be a governor?

No! While some knowledge of education can be helpful, we are looking for people from all walks of life. What matters is enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to helping children succeed.

What is a Community Governor?

Community Governors are members of the local community who bring valuable external perspectives and skills to the Governing Board. They are appointed by the board based on their experience, expertise, or community involvement. You don’t need to have a child at the school—just a desire to support Weston Village Primary and make a positive difference.

How much time does it take?

Governors attend around five Full Governing Board meetings each year, plus committee meetings where relevant. There are also opportunities to visit school, attend events and undertake training. Most governors dedicate around 10-15 hours per term, but it’s flexible around your other commitments.

Is training provided?

Absolutely! All new governors are offered induction and ongoing training opportunities to develop their understanding of governance and education. Our Governing Board is friendly and supportive, and new members are always well-supported.
