Join Our Governing Board
Being a school governor at Weston Village Primary School is a rewarding voluntary role and an opportunity to contribute to the life and development of the school.
Governors work together to provide support, challenge and local oversight. They help ensure that the school has a clear strategic direction, that leaders are held to account for educational performance, that resources are used effectively and that the views of pupils, families and the wider community are considered.
You do not need to work in education to become a governor. We welcome people with a range of backgrounds, skills and experience who are willing to learn, ask thoughtful questions and act in the best interests of all pupils.

What Does a Governor Do?
Governors have a strategic rather than operational role.
Their work includes:
contributing to the school’s vision and strategic direction
supporting and challenging school leaders
monitoring educational performance and school improvement priorities
considering financial performance and whether resources are being used effectively
undertaking link-governor monitoring
considering policies and statutory responsibilities
ensuring that stakeholder voices are heard
serving on committees or panels where required.
The Headteacher and senior leaders are responsible for the day-to-day running of the school; governors provide oversight rather than managing school operations.
Do I Need Experience in Education?
No.
Experience in education can be useful, but it is not essential. Governors come from a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds.
We particularly value people who are:
committed to improving outcomes for children
willing to ask constructive and challenging questions
able to work as part of a team
interested in the wider life of the school
willing to undertake training and develop their understanding of governance.
What Is a Community Governor?
Community Governors are selected by the Governing Board because of the skills, experience or perspective they can bring.
You do not need to have a child at Weston or live in the immediate village. The important thing is a commitment to supporting the school and acting in the best interests of all pupils.
How Much Time Does It Take?
Governors are expected to attend at least four full Governing Board meetings each year, together with relevant committee meetings where applicable.
Governors also undertake link visits, read meeting papers, prepare questions, complete training and occasionally attend school events.
The attached role description also makes clear that governors are expected to take on a link role, undertake training and visit school from time to time.
Is Training Provided?
Yes.
New governors receive induction and ongoing training to help them understand the school, their responsibilities and the wider education and governance context.
Governors are supported by the Chair, fellow governors, school leaders and The Cornovii Trust.
