PE and Sport Premium

PE and Sport Premium at Weston

The PE and Sport Premium is additional government funding provided to primary schools to improve the quality of PE, physical activity and sport.

The funding must be used to make additional and sustainable improvements. This means developing or adding to the provision the school already offers and building staff capacity so that improvements continue to benefit pupils in future years.

At Weston Village Primary School, we use the funding to help children become more active, broaden their experience of physical activity and sport, strengthen the quality of PE teaching and increase opportunities for participation and competition.

Our approach is closely linked to our wider PE curriculum, inclusion and wellbeing priorities.

PE and Sport Premium 2025–26

Weston received £18,090 in PE and Sport Premium funding for the 2025–26 academic year.

The funding was used across the five national key areas:

  • increasing pupils’ engagement in regular physical activity

  • raising the profile of PE and sport across the school

  • increasing staff confidence, knowledge and skills

  • broadening pupils’ experience of sports and physical activities

  • increasing participation in competitive sport.

How the funding was used

The largest proportion of funding supported regular physical activity, including sports coaching, the Weston Mile, active lunchtimes, playtime resources, the multi-gym and EYFS physical activity provision.

Funding also supported:

  • professional development and curriculum support for staff

  • PE and sport leadership

  • equipment and resources

  • outdoor learning opportunities

  • membership of sporting networks and competitions.

The full report below gives a detailed breakdown of expenditure, impact and sustainability.

Impact in 2025–26

The report identifies a number of strengths from the year.

Pupils had access to two hours of PE each week, alongside wider opportunities for physical activity. Active lunchtimes and regular movement were embedded within school life, and 95% of pupils took part in at least one sports club, festival or external competition.

Investment in staff development also supported increasing confidence and consistency in the teaching of PE. The report records sustained CPD for teachers and teaching assistants, curriculum support and peer coaching.

Participation in competitive sport was supported through local sports partnerships, a competition calendar and inclusive selection processes designed to broaden participation.

Priorities for Further Development

Our report identifies the following priorities for continued development:

  • increasing physical activity for children who are less active outside school

  • broadening access to external competition and outdoor learning

  • strengthening the connection between physical activity and mental wellbeing

  • continuing to review the PE curriculum, equipment and adaptive PE practice.

Swimming and Water Safety

Swimming is taught as part of our Key Stage 2 PE curriculum.

All Year 5 pupils access a series of 10 swimming lessons at Sandbach Leisure Centre. Where a pupil has not yet met the required competencies, they receive a further series of lessons in Year 6.

For the Year 6 cohort in 2025–26:

  • 94% could swim competently, confidently and proficiently over at least 25 metres

  • 94% could use a range of strokes effectively

  • 91% could perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

  • 91% achieved all three requirements.

PE and Sport Premium funding was not used to fund the core swimming curriculum, which is consistent with current DfE requirements that curriculum swimming is funded from core school funding.
